Of course successful people are unique in their own ways. Some like apples and some like oranges. But time and time again, over the year and decades and even centuries of examining winners in the business world, they all share certain characteristics.

• They go that extra mile. Before they became entrepreneurs and captains of industry, they always did more than what was asked of them. When their tasks were finished, they were ready and willing to take on more.

• They understand sometimes you have to fail in order to succeed. Success doesn’t come easy, and often it takes a few failures before you hit it. Oprah Winfrey failed miserably at her first TV job. She went on to be one of the most successful and recognized (and rich) TV personalities of all time.

• They listen to their intuition. It’s like that old country song… “You gotta know when to fold ‘em. Know when to hold ‘em.” Success folks know when it’s time to move on, and they can mean making difficult choices.

• You make your own luck. That means you do things everyday to put yourself in the position to “get lucky.” You position yourself for success. It’s about being in the right spot at the right time with the right attitude.

• They’re goal-oriented. They are so goal oriented that they know every morning when they wake up, what they want to get done that day. They set goals that they can reach and that will capitalize on their strengths.

• They don’t make the same mistake twice. On top of that, they will own up to their screw-up. It all boils down to being accountable and not being afraid to try in the first place.

• They’re good communicators. In a matter of seconds, they can tell you what they do and do it in a way that will make you believe in them. They are confident and persuasive.

• They make change. They don’t wait around for the sky to fall. They do what it takes to keep it from falling, and earn a profit from it!

• They are flexible. If one way doesn’t work, before it’s even obvious, they already have another way in mind.  They are masters at reinventing themselves and generating new ideas.

• They are problem solvers. They know how to use who they know to resolve an issue. That means not being afraid to ask questions to the people who have the answers. But it’s not a one-way street… they will offer their own skills or knowledge in return for the right answer.

• They never stop learning. Successful people remain students for their whole lives. Most importantly, they aren’t afraid to try something new and fail at it.

• The journey excites them more than the money. They don’t even like get-rich schemes. It’s all about the experience, building a career and having meaning to their lives.

• They’re leaders. That means they know who they are and they are confident about it. They won’t waste time on things that they aren’t good at or that don’t have meaning.

• They aren’t just consumers… they are creators. They are the ones coming up with new ways to do things, new products and new ways to accomplish things.

• Finally, they aren’t afraid to give back. They have that “reach one, teach one” attitude and are eager to pass on their discoveries and ideas.
